What A Day - We Attended the Power of Youth Student Leadership Conference in Maynard, MA

What a Day, A special thanks to a host of people for making this a reality.....Dana and Talia Leman from RandomKid.org and Deborah Peeple's from ELNA for making this all possible and letting us know, inviting and making us feel so welcome today...Patrick, Nadhege and Monica from Citizen Schools, the parents of the children for signing their permission slips and principal Bott for sending the kids...Lee Ann and Joanne from Fidelity Cares for their continuous support and help arranging transportation with Boston Coach (thank you Boston Coach).. Gale Dolly for preparing such wonderful lunches for the kids...and Kenny, my 3.25yr old son Kenny for helping me bake great chocolat chip cookies for ride home...

11 (9 kids + Patrick and me) boarded the bus at 730am at the Rogers school. On the way over we listened to music, shared some favorite ice creams (Patrick black rasberry with cookie batter), and prepared for the conference including what we would see, which workshops we would be in and prepared some questions for Talia Leman, the founder of RandomKid.org.....we even shared a few good deeds including......

Aliyah - an elderly woman fell down while trying to put down her trash on trash day and I saw someone help her up
Francis - at school, I helped a kid who someone knocked into and then dropped all his books....I stopped to help him pick them up
Way to go guys!!!!!!

Where to start.............what a day. Talia kicked it off with an amazing speech showing us that kids "have the power." She highlighted 5 principles that we can definately use during the class as we try (like she has) to make the world around us a better place. Talia shared valuable lessons including "be who you are", "be committed to solve real world problems", "connect with people along the way", "projects can turn out different than planned" so stay flexible, "think big", and finally (one of my absolute favorites which I have learned so many different ways, "if you give, you will get back more in return." The kids then attended a bunch of different workshops including "the power of anyone", "youth can be climate scientists", "billions of thirsty people..." and "free to be me and you..."...among the many lessons we learned how to use all of our special skills and traits to help others, why global warming is occuring and what we need to think of to help slow it, efforts to increase the global supply of clean water, and finally lessons about the need for tolerance and sensitivity from an ex police officer.

More highlights and lessons from the kids.........
