The WOW! - Our Appreciation Ceremony

As part of our WOW! (the culmination of this apprenticeship), the class put on an Appreciation Ceremony where each student thanked, recognized and "awarded" someone special in their life for all of their support such as a parent, relative or good friend. Watch the clips below the kids recognizing the award winners. Also see our video on Kindness below where the kids discuss what "Kindness Is" and also do random acts of kindness in and around the Rogers School.

Last Class Before Our WOW - Brainstorming for our Kindness Video

As part of our WOW event next Monday, the kids prepared a commercial about kindness and helping others. Before filming the commercial today, they brainstormed about what kindness means to each of them, ways to make the Rogers Middle School better and ways to help make the world better. They came up with many great ideas...many of which you will hear in their kindness video next week and to be posted shortly to the blogsite. Here they are......

"Kindness Is".............
"just one word, but there are endless ways to show kindness"
is giving to somebody else
helping an old lady cross the street
putting a smile on someone's face
keeping the earth clean
teaching younger kids
giving someone a dollar if they need it for the bus
changing someone's life with love
helping people

"We can make the Rogers Middle School a better place by"........
studying more
helping other kids
stopping violence and spreading more peace
recycle more
keeping the Rogers clean
helping someone when others make fun of him/her
picking up after yourself
stop fighting, be more mature. don't do anything back if someone is bothering you
just be happy
stop a fight if you see one
we are all bros and sis...love each other

"We can make the world a better place by"..........
recycling
stop killing
stop racism
like Martin Luther King Jr said, "we may not have come over on the same boat, but we are in the same ship now"
putting an end to teen violence
helping fight breast cancer
clean up the streets/stop littering
help people in need
help poor people
spread peace

Diploma Time

During today's class, the last class before our WOW next week, the kids received Diplomas. The diplomas are meant to congratulate the kids on their efforts and courage while helping others over the last 10 weeks. The diploma tells the kids to "follow your hopes and dreams for yourself and others and work to make the world around you a better place. You can make a difference."

The First Recipient Of An Appreciation Award - My Mom

As part of our upcoming WOW (each apprenticeship culminates with a WOW which highlights lessons of the class), we will be holding an appreciation ceremony. The inspiration for this event was actually Ed Brenegar, a writer for the Gannet News in NC and a highly sought after leadership/business consultant, and one of the "celebrities" who wrote in suggestions with the help of RandomKid for acts of kindness for the kids to carry out as. During the ceremony, each of the students will recognize and honor someone special in their life. Someone who has been particularly supportive to them. Many of the kids will recognize a parent(s) for their love and devotion. As an example to the kids, last class I read my appreciation statement for the person I wanted to recognize, my mom. And today I saw my mom and "officially" awarded my mother with her prize and the class's first appreciation award, includes my statement about her (see below) and a big yellow "Outstanding Ribbon."
